Polyester powder coating adds durability and provides corrosion resistance. By using high quality powder, the powder coating process ensures a maintenance free, hardwearing finish which is also resistant to yellowing and fading over time. Having the process in-house in centrally-located Nottinghamshire ensures that Star Fasteners maintain complete quality control, have low minimum order quantities and can guarantee quoted delivery times too.
What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is a type of finishing process that is applied to metal surfaces. It consists of a flowing, fluidised powder which when baked in a powder coating oven, flows as a liquid before cooling to form a hard and durable finish.
How is Powder Coating Applied?
Three stages to powder coating application:
- Firstly, the surface needs preparing and cleaning. This can be done in several ways, depending on the final finish requirements. Star Fasteners hand wipe the prepared trays of fasteners with a cleaner. This pre-treatment is designed to clean and prepare the surface allowing for good, reliable adhesion of the powder coating. It is then dried to a suitable temperature.
- The second stage involves the careful application of the powder coating. Electrostatically charged on leaving the gun, the positive (+ve) coating is attracted to the grounded substrate material. It is then held in place by the electric force. The application equipment is required to ensure sufficient charge of the particle, as well as field strength.
- Finally, the trays of prepared fasteners are heated to a specific temperature in the powder coating oven until the powder has fully flowed across the surface. Times and temperatures will vary depending on factors such as the powder, thickness, material type and product weight. They come out once we are satisfied that all parts of the product have cured evenly.
